BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF THE AUSTIN AREA CELEBRATES 50th BIRTHDAY

Today, April 14, 2017, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area (BGCAA) celebrates its 50th birthday and 50 years of service to local youth. The organization kicked off its 50th year yesterday by hosting 28 birthday parties at each of its clubs across the Greater Austin areaa.

The birthday parties were the first of many special activities and happenings slated for BGCAA’s 50th year. Beyond integrating the half-century milestone into annual events such as the Great Futures Spring Luncheon, Austin Duck Derby, Kids Day, the Brian Jones Golf Classic and the Blue Door Fall Gala, BGCAA will be introducing several new initiatives with the great futures in mind, among them: the first-ever CEO Youth Council, the first-ever alumni gathering and the “50 Days for 50 Years” Fall Campaign and more.

BGCAA was incorporated April 14, 1967. Back then it was known as the Boys’ Club of Austin, and the club met inside a repurposed space at a Central Austin church on West Johanna Street. That space was a gift to the organization—an organization that has since grown to a total of 28 clubs and four outreach programs, becoming the largest, most vital and most impactful youth-development agency in Travis and Bastrop counties.

“Investing in kids does more than change their lives today—it impacts our community tomorrow,” said BGCAA CEO Misti Potter, who has been part of the Austin nonprofit’s leadership team for more than two years and has worked with the Boys & Girls Clubs movement for more than 20 years. “We are very excited to celebrate our half-century milestone and to continue giving local youth the support and resources they need to build great futures for themselves, Central Texas and the world.”

BGCAA credits its phenomenal growth to passionate leaders and staff and a dedicated board of directors, as well as thousands of individual and corporate donors who have supported the movement—and ultimately Central Texas youth—over the last five decades.

Statistics demonstrating BGCAA’s growth from 2001 to 2016 include:

  • Total local youth served per day increased from 340 to 2,250
  • Local youth served per year increased from 1,546 to 12,500—for a total of 118,510 kids served during that
    15-year period
  • Annual Club Kid memberships increased from 1,156 to 7,125
  • Annual budget has grown from $773,679 to $6,248,158
  • Club programming and services are vital to youth development and have grown from six programs to 119 programs serving our three pillars of Academic Success, Character & Leadership and Healthy Lifestyles

Even more notable than the facts and figures associated with BGCAA are the thousands of success stories of Austin youth whose futures have been changed for the better because of their involvement with local clubs. On a national level, the Boys & Girls Clubs organization has played a role in creating great futures for many Americans, including those with ties to Texas—Dan Rather (Houston)—as well as other celebrities such as Denzel Washington, Ne-Yo, Kerry Washington, Shaun White, Martin Sheen and others, many of whom serve as spokespeople and volunteers for the nonprofit today, among them University of Texas football great and NFL player Colt McCoy.
